This sculpture commemorates a religious procession lead by the Bishop of San Juan and the women of the city to pray for salvation against the attacking British in 1797. Supposedly, the bells of the cathedral were rung from sunset to sunrise while the procession wove its way through the city. The British saw the torches and heard the bells and believed the procession was a rally of reinforcements. The British did not engage and the city was saved.
