Don’t Worry It’s The Weekend

No te preocupes … es el fin de semana y todavía tenemos luces.KidPixsmile.jpg

Today is Day 213 since Hurricane Maria made landfall and Day 226 since Hurricane Irma made landfall on the island of Puerto Rico. My family has lights. I’m good with that. AEE still reports 97.27% of its subscribers have power.

Back In The Day

So long ago, the ties that bind us remain. I know that if I need you, you will still hold my hand. Thanks Poche!IMG_3453.jpg

Everything

The land meant everything to my father. The rich red dirt. The pineapples, papaya, and watermelons were his treasures. We lived right on La Finca at the end of the curving drive lined with lemon trees. From the porch, I watched the watermelons grow bigger each day. The papaya trees were past the rancho in their own grove. And behind us stretched the pineapple fields all the way to the mountains. I can’t explain the understanding of how the plants perfected themselves in their fruits. My father knew and just smiled.IMG_3455.jpg

More Cooking With The Bad Boricua

There was always a pot of beans on the stove in every Puertorican home. Being the Bad Boricua, I’m improvising all over the place. Got my can of beans (actually we use 3 cans), my sofrito, and my best spoon. I’m ready. Got the tostonera out. We will have fresh tostones (double fried plantains) no matter what!IMG_3446.jpg

Cooking With The Bad Boricua

I only know how to make flan from the box. I don’t care. It tastes like home. Es muy importante que quemas tanto la sartén como la cuchara. It is very important to burn both the spoon and the pan. In my house anyway.

Fortín de San Gerónimo

On a dare, we hopped the old stone wall and ran toward the fort. Sitting low by the wall, I told you my secrets. You told me yours. I promised to always love you, dance all night, and be your mom. We claimed the fort, you and I. Together everything is possible.
